United Way’s 9th Annual ‘Undies Sundays’ drive kicks off Sunday
United Way’s 9th Annual ‘Undies Sundays’ drive kicks off Sunday GRAND FORKS, ND-October 2, 2012- Throughout the month of October, the United Way of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and Area is collecting personal care items for individuals and families in need in our community. Each Sunday in October, parishioners at the area’s churches will be asked to bring in packages of new underwear, socks, diapers, soap, shampoo and other personal care items. Volunteers from Altru’s Professional Nurses Committee will count and sort the items which will then be distributed through United Way’s partner agencies, area shelters and food banks. “Sometimes we take for granted the simplest things,” said Pat Berger, President/CEO of the United Way of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks & Area. “Imagine taking a nice hot shower at the end of a long day and not having a decent pair of underwear to put on.” According to Berger, for some people in our community this is a reality. “Children removed from their homes because of abuse and neglect are often told to take whatever they can fit into a trash bag,” said Berger, “and adults in an abusive relationship often flee with little or no personal belongings.” In 2011, a record 15,874 items were collected. This year’s campaign kicks off Sunday, October 7 and runs thru Sunday, October 21. Donated items can be dropped off at one of these participating churches: Augustana Lutheran Church, Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, Bethany Lutheran Church, Christ the King Free Lutheran Church, Family of God Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church, First Church of God, Holy Family Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mendenhall Presbyterian Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sharon Lutheran Church, St. Mark’s ELCA, St. Mary’s Church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, University Lutheran Church, Wesley United Methodist Church, Zion Lutheran Church of Oslo, and Zion United Methodist.
