FARGO—Vibra Healthcare, a 31-bed, speciality acute care hospital located at Sanford South University, announced plans Wednesday, Jan. 25, to move into the new Sanford Medical Center in spring 2018.

Custer Huseby, Vibra's regional chief executive officer, said plans for the $9 million "hospital within a hospital" are being reviewed by the North Dakota Department of Health. Once approved, construction will begin on half of the new hospital's seventh floor.

Huseby said they were forced to move because Sanford plans to consolidate orthopedics and sports medicine at the South University campus. The move is part of a reshuffling of services stemming from the new hospital opening later this year.

Huseby said he is excited about the impending move.

"This will be a state-of-the-art facility that will enhance the quality of care provided to our special patient population," he said. "Continuing our partnership with Sanford strengthens the care options available to our community and improves both employee and patient satisfaction."

Vibra Healthcare will gain an estimated 10,000 square feet, which Huseby said will allow them to use their full 31-bed license. They now have space for 26 beds.

Based in Mechanicsburg, Pa., Vibra Healthcare operates over 90 specialty acute care hospitals, medical rehabilitation hospitals and outpatient physical rehabilitation centers in 20 states. Its providers specialize in treating medically complex patients who suffer from major orthopedic, neurologic, stroke, multiple traumas, cardiac and respiratory conditions.

The Fargo location opened in 1998. Today, it has nearly 100 employees and 135 physicians with privileges to work at the hospital.

Vibra also operates a 44-bed facility in Mandan, N.D.
