More than eight thousand milk gallons donated to local food banks
GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ)--Thanks to donations from shoppers, two local nonprofits will have more than 8 thousand gallons of milk for the holidays.
Hugo's has been collecting 'milk money' from shoppers since October, and on Wednesday, those donations provided milk to the Great Plains Food Bank and North Country Food Bank.
Event coordinators say since milk is such an expensive, perishable food item, the donation is especially valuable.
“It’s a huge benefit for the pantries and for the people who struggle with hunger in our communitites. Milk is a staple, and it’s an expensive product, so being able to get this milk through Hugo’s and Dean’s Foods through this project is really important for the people we serve,” said Susie Novak of North Country Food Bank.
The milk is given to the food banks incrementally, so it won't expire.
