Group of veterans hopes to rename street
GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ)--It's been 8 years, and a proposed veterans memorial park still stands empty in Grand Forks.
But now the group is hoping to rename a street.
A local veteran is set to speak tonight at a working session at city hall to ask them to rename sections of 24th Avenue South and South 34th Street "Veterans Memorial Parkway".
It's all part of a vision for a $1.2 million dollar -- 60 foot wall they want to build -- a project in the works since 2010.
With only a quarter of it in the bank -- they're hoping to fundraise hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“By percentage there's more people that volunteer for the military than any other state in the nation.I think we need a veterans memorial park here in Grand Forks. We may be one of the major cities in North Dakota that doesn't have one,” said organizer, Al Palmer.
City council will not vote on this tonight -- but we could see a vote on the street name in the coming months.
