Authorities identify man who died in fiery crash on Interstate 29 south of Grand Forks

8-year-old killed in Nelson County ATV accident

An 8-year-old boy was killed when the ATV he was driving rolled over in Nelson County.

Reece Jorde was driving on his family's farm just north of Tolna around 6pm on Saturday when the accident happened. Nelson County Sheriff Keith Olson says Jorde was wearing a helmet at the time and that it was simply an unfortunate accident.

In North Dakota, children younger than 12 can't get permits to drive ATVs but they are allowed to drive on private property. Olson says it's fortunate there aren't more tragic accidents involving children and ATVs.

Sheriff Olson recommends that all minors take an ATV safety course, even if they're too young to get a permit.

An ATV safety course is available online through the North Dakota Parks and Recreation department website.
