Emerald Ash Borer threat provokes warning to campers
The Grand Forks Park District is warning the public not to transport firewood back from camping trips due to Emerald Ash Borer concerns.
The insect can damage and even eventually kill Ash trees, one of the major varieties in the city. Ribbons and posters have been wrapped around many area trees with information about the bug and how it spreads. Officials are hoping to avoid the same kind of devastation that the Dutch Elm Beetle cause in Grand Forks back in the 70s and 80s. The concern has even caused the city to stop planting new Ash trees to help diversify the city's trees and avoid creating one large target.
At this time the insect has not been found in North Dakota or north of the twin cities, and officials hope to keep it that way.
