Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker being treated for kidney cancer
FARGO – Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker has been undergoing radiation treatment for kidney cancer over the past several weeks.
Following treatment for renal cell carcinoma, Walaker, 73, experienced weakness and was hospitalized, city spokeswoman Karena Carlson said in a news release.Walaker has made “significant improvement” recently and is now recovering at home. He will return to his mayoral duties within seven to 10 days, Carlson said.
Walaker won re-election this summer to his third term as mayor, despite campaign rhetoric from challenger and former City Commissioner Brad Wimmer that Walaker believed were attacks on his age and health. Wimmer denied that his “Fargo Fit” campaign was a slight against the mayor.
During the campaign, Walaker said he had concurrent tooth and sinus infections that caused him to lose about 60 pounds, but he said despite that, his health was “probably too good.”
