Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker receiving treatment for kidney cancer
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - New details emerging tonight about the health of Fargo's leader.
Mayor Dennis Walaker is battling a form of kidney cancer and has just been released from the hospital following treatment side effects.
This is the first official word we are hearing of Mayor Walaker's battle with cancer.
The city of Fargo released a statement today saying he has been receiving treatment for weeks, and following radiation treatment, he became week and was hospitalized.
He's now been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
Now, the city isn't releasing details on the severity of his cancer, how long he's had it and what prognosis doctors have given him.
We do know he has had radiation treatment and today I spoke with a doctor at the Roger Maris Cancer Center who says they normally only use radiation with kidney cancer in the event that it has spread and is causing symptoms.
Anu Gaba M.D./Roger Maris Cancer Center: “They can come about. Symptoms can be caused by any part of the body. If the cancer is in the kidney, that can cause symptoms. Mostly we see symptoms because of spread to other parts of the body.”
Now, again, I want to be clear, we do not know what stage of cancer Mayor Walaker is facing.
That was just a statement of how doctors normally treat kidney cancer. Good news though, the city says Walaker has made significant improvements and feels much better, but needs a few more days before returning to work.
