Five children and 3 adults rescued from boundary waters on Basswood Lake
Five children and 3 adults have been rescued from the boundary waters, a happy ending for what started as a terrifying ordeal, authorities tell us it happened on Basswood Lake, right up near the Canadian border Thursday afternoon, but thankfully everyone is accounted for.
Justin Mayne with the Lake County Rescue Squad says all invovled are in good condition, but some were being monitored for slight hypothermia.
Mayne says the original call alerting authorities of the missing party came in around 4:20.
30 minutes into the search, rescue teams located three of the missing canoers near Canadian point about an hour and a half away from the rescue crews' staging area, which was Latrourell's Resort in Ely.
Those three were found in good condition but without canoes. Almost a half hour later, Mayne says the rescue squads spotted the remaining five canoers just north of Washington Island, but swampy conditions made it difficult for squads to reach their location.
