Girl, attempting to cross highway on bike, killed in collision with vehicle

A 6-year-old Rolla, N.D., girl died after she was hit by a pickup while she was crossing a highway on a bicycle Tuesday evening.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the girl crossed U.S. Highway 281 in Rolla in front of a 2009 Chevrolet Colorado driven by Ronald Mackinnon, 72, of Rolla, at 6:25 p.m. Mackinnon did not see the girl cross the road, as he was checking his rearview mirror, and could not avoid her.

The girl, whose name is being withheld, was declared dead on the scene, according to the report.

Mackinnon does not face charges, according to the patrol.
