Grand Forks water rescue center opening

The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department said Friday it has named new its water operations center after Guy Miller, a Minto, N.D., man washed away by floodwater last spring.

Miller’s family and friends donated funds to help the department buy a cabinet and plaque honoring drowning victims in the area and efforts by rescuers.

The 26,000-square-foot operations center is at 5205 Gateway Drive, Grand Forks, with room for rescue equipment and classrooms. An opening ceremony will be held 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Miller’s family along with the families of Anthony Kuznia and Delano Gaking will be on hand. Kuznia, 11, drowned in the Red River in August, and Delano Gaking, 19, drowned in the Red River in 2010.

The Millers will announce a Guy Miller 5k run on Sept. 20 in Minto and Kuznia’s family will announce the Anthony Kuznia Memorial Motorcycle rid on Aug. 23.
