Polk and Red Lake Counties update dispatcher center with next generation technology
Minnesota is one of only eight states that is has a complete "Next Generation 911" network. Polk and Red Lake counties recently connected to the network, completing a process that started three years ago.
This is really about keeping up with technology that is already out there. For example, cell phones and collision notification systems like OnStar.
In the near future 911 centers across Minnesota will be able to receive and send text messages. And in addition to that, callers will be able to send, pictures and videos to dispatcher that could help responders with location and other details of the emergency.
The Dispatch Center in Grand Forks is also working at upgrading their 911 center. Officials there say they should be able to receive text message there sometime in the next few months.
