Stephen, MN, Family Gets Much-needed Support After 4-year-old Killed in Fire
GRAFTON, ND (WDAZ-TV) - A rural Stephen, MN, family is getting some much-needed support after losing their son in a fire that also destroyed their home. People in Grafton and Stephen both held fundraisers Saturday for the Field family.
4-year-old Mathew Milhem died on April 20 in the fire that destroyed this home just outside of the town Stephen. Since that time, the community has rallied to support the family with supplies and a temporary home in Grafton until they can recover from this tragic loss.
"We have a furnished place to live because of the surrounding communities, especially Stephen. Stephen is actually holding a benefit for us tonight; they are doing a Mexican dinner," Barbara Field said.
You also could hear the support for the family rumbling through downtown Grafton, where a motorcycle run started for the family.
"I wanted to do a bike run for quite a while but never had the motivation to get it started and this was it," bike run organizer Charla Olson said.
Olson worked with Mathew's father David Field in Grafton and organized the run.
"I would hope that someone would do the same for me if I needed it," Olson said.
"Everybody has come out so well to help and support. It's been amazing," David Field said.
Bikers like Larry Greicar, from Grand Forks, rode into Grafton not knowing the family, only that it was a good cause.
"About the only thing I can say is it's the right thing to do and at the same time we enjoy it," Greicar said.
About 50 bikers took part in the 100-mile ride stopping in several small towns on the way. It's estimated that Saturday's ride will raise about $1,000, all going directly to the Field family's expenses.
Many local businesses in Grafton donated food and supplies to make the motorcycle ride possible.
