Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It has been a troubling 24 hours in the racing world. As you heard and watched at the start of the newscast, NASCAR driver Tony Stewart struck another racer who was on foot, the racer named Kevin Ward Junior was thrown about 30 feet after being run over by Stewart's right-rear tire.

He was dead by the time his ambulance reached the hospital.

Stewart races on the dirt tracks often, including several visits to West Fargo over the years, which is the video you're seeing here.

No charges have been filed against Stewart as of now. He was scheduled to race today in the Sprint Cup event at Watkins Glen, but withdrew from the race. His competition director Greg Zipadelli addressed the media this morning.

Greg Zipadelli/Stewart-Haas Racing Competition Director: “Unbelievable tragedy. Hearts go out to his family. Thoughts and prayers. This is a very emotional time for everybody. His family, our family, Tony Stewart. That being said we feel that as a group. Tony will not drive today.”

AJ Allmendinger won the race today at Watkins Glen.
