U.S. House subcommittee schedules hearing on child protection on Spirit Lake Indian Reservation
A U.S. House subcommittee has scheduled a hearing later this month on child protection and the justice system on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation.
Representative Kevin Cramer requested the hearing because he wants to determine if congressional action is needed to address the reservation's problems with child abuse and deaths.
The Spirit Lake tribe came under fire in 2012 for its child protection system.
The Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs stepped in late that year to oversee the system.
The hearing is set for later this month.
