A soldier who graduated from Fosston High School in 2000 has been killed in Afghanistan, apparently as his U.S. Army unit was a recovering a damaged military vehicle.

Tom Harmon says that he was notified of the death of his son, 29-year-old Sgt. Matthew Harmon, early Monday.

He says the circumstances of the death aren't completely clear, but it appears his son was recovering a damaged vehicle when an improvised explosive device killed him.

Harmon says his son joined the National Guard during high school then transferred to the U.S. Army in 2004. Afghanistan was his third deployment after two in Iraq.

Harmon says his son is survived by his wife, Nicole, a Grand Forks native, and three children, ages 8, 5 and 3. Harmon says he expects to bury his son in Fosston.
