Prescription drug abuse is gaining on drugs like alcohol and marijuana. In order to stay on top of the abuses abuses, Polk County will soon hold a seminar on what are called pharmaceutical parties.

Det. Chris Olson/East Grand Forks Police Department: "Pharmaceutical parties are what we know it to be people getting together and abusing narcotics. Whether or not they are their own or stolen narcotics."

Some of the most abused prescribed drugs include Ritalin or Adderall, two drugs commonly used to treat symptoms of ADHD. Pain killers like Vicodin and others are also favorites among abusers.

Det. Chris Olson/East Grand Forks Police Department: "Definitely your pain killers like your Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone."

Detective Sergeant Chris Olson of the East Grand Forks Police Department says he hasn't heard too much about pharmaceutical parties, but he know they are out there. He says the draw to prescription drugs is accessibility and their affects.

Det. Chris Olson/East Grand Forks Police Department: "I Definitely think its a better high, The different ways they can take it, it's a different kinda high too."

Olson is likely one of a couple officers from their department that will attend that meeting on pharmaceutical parties. He says like any drug problem, it's an approach to prevent a bad problem from becoming worse.

Det. Chris Olson/East Grand Forks Police Department: "Definitely enforced. Very aggressively with the department and within the county. To do the best job that we can."

The meeting with the Polk County Health Department and the officers will be on January 11th.
