LAKOTA, ND - Two people were injured in a two-vehicle collision Friday afternoon in Lakota.
The Highway Patrol says Kathleen J. Demester, 17, of New Rockford, ND, and Walter Sturm, 63, of Barrhead, Alberta, were injured in the crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and North Dakota Highway 1 just after 2 p.m.
The extent of their injuries isn't yet known.
The Patrol says Demester was heading north in a 2007 Chevrolet four-door vehicle from New Rockford to Lakota when she pulled forward into the path of Sturm's vehicle. Demester was using her phone at the time of the crash, according to an accident report.
Sturm was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer with passenger Virginia Sturm, 60, eastbound from Alberta heading to Grand Forks. Sturm had a hitch camper attached to his vehicle.
Virginia wasn't injured in the crash.
The Patrol says Sturm tried to veer left to avoid Demester, but couldn't, and the two vehicles collided in the passing lane of Highway 2.
Sturm's vehicle came to rest in the median with front passenger-side damage. The camper turned over onto the driver's side.
Demester's vehicle rotated clockwise and then struck the camper, sustaining damage to the driver's side rear quarter. Demester's vehicle came to rest in the south ditch. It was totaled, according to an accident report.
All three involved in the accident were wearing seat belts and were taken to Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake.
Demester was cited for failure to yield at an intersection.
Assisting the North Dakota Highway Patrol were the Nelson County Sheriff's Office, Lakota Rural Fire, and Michigan and Lakota Ambulance.
