Union Workers Hopeful as Negotiations Resume

Contract negotiations between American Crystal Sugar Company and the union will resume Thursday. The company's board met in Grand Forks on Wednesday, but it appears a federal mediator called the two sides back to the table.

Contract negotiations between American Crystal Sugar Company and the union will resume Thursday.

The company's board met in Grand Forks on Wednesday, but it appears a federal mediator called the two sides back to the table.

Some union workers in Crookston were surprised by the meeting this week, and hope this is a step in the right direction.

Although the meeting is set, others are wondering if an agreement will be reached.

The locked-out workers have been picketing for more than three weeks and finally, negotiations between American Crystal Sugar and the union will be brought back to the table.

This comes after workers went to the the city of Crookston asking for some help, which prompted the mayor David Genereux to write a letter encouraging both sides to come back to the table.

Members of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks councils wrote similar letters last week.

"I think the process, just to get things started is good so hopefully I helped a little bit, we'll see," Genereux said.

Union workers say this meeting is a step in the right direction and the letters and support have helped them get to this point.
