MetisFest Under Way at Peace Garden

DUNSEITH, N.D. (AP) — A weekend celebration of the Metis culture was getting under way Friday at the International Peace Garden on the U.S.-Canada border north of Dunseith.

DUNSEITH, N.D. (AP) — A weekend celebration of the Metis culture was getting under way Friday at the International Peace Garden on the U.S.-Canada border north of Dunseith.

The Metis people were of Cree and French lineage. The descendants in Minnesota, Manitoba and North Dakota include members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa.

It's the third year for the MetisFest. After attendance the first two years of 7,000 and 10,000, organizers are expecting at least 12,000 people through Sunday.
