WRIGHTSTOWN, N.J. (AP) — The U.S. military is evacuating aircraft from a base in central New Jersey in preparation for Hurricane Irene.

Officials at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst say they're actively preparing for winds approaching hurricane force.

Air Force transport aircraft and tankers based there are being sent to Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. The New Jersey Air National Guard is sending its KC-135 refueling aircraft to a McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas.

The hurricane is projected to hit the state on Sunday.
