UND Receives $3.69 Million For Energy Studies

UND's Institute for Energy Studies received $2,952,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy to further develop their research. Project partners gave an additional $738,000.

UND's Institute for Energy Studies received $2,952,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy to further develop their research. Project partners gave an additional $738,000.

The University was selected as one of 16 locations chosen to research ways to improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of carbon capture systems used at coal-fired power plants.

UND researchers submitted their very fast and efficient model after about six months of small scale testing.

Researchers can now take their process through the next steps for testing at UND's steam plant.

"A good opportunity for education. You know, the key thing that we want to do is educate the next generation of engineers, the energy experts. And then we want to develop technologies as well," UND Institute for Energy Studies Director Steve Benson said.

The project will develop over three years. Faculty, graduate students, and staff engineers will work together on the test plan.
