CROOKSTON, Minn. (AP) — The widow of Mahnomen County sheriff's deputy Chris Dewey says she hopes the man on trial in her husband's death spends the rest of his life in prison.

Emily Dewey tells KFGO-AM she believes Thomas Fairbanks is sorry he got caught, but she's "not certain he's sorry about anything else."

Fairbanks is on trial in Crookston for first-degree murder. Fairbanks took the stand in his own defense Tuesday and acknowledged he shot the deputy but said he was drunk and feared for his own life.

Deputy Dewey was shot in the head and abdomen Feb. 18, 2009, while investigating a report of a drunken driver in Mahnomen. The deputy died last year of his injuries.

Jurors heard closing arguments Wednesday afternoon.
