People living in the town of Crary, North Dakota will no longer be able to buy stamps or send packages at their local post office. The post office's services have been suspended...after the officer in charge resigned. Today workers cleaned out the post office in Crary after its doors opened for the last time this morning. At this point it's uncertain if and when it will re-open.

"They say it's suspended, but when they haul everything out of your office it looks like it's closed to me, said Leon Gilbraith, a former post master who retired 4 years ago. He also had a P-O box at the post office...until now.

The 20 people who had PO boxes here at the post office will no longer be coming here to get their mail. Instead they'll be picking it up in a mailbox at their home or on their street.

"I had to call pretty much all my correspondents and get my PO box changed over to my street address," said postal patron Royal Dingman.

Since postal patrons will be able to buy stamps and send packages through their carrier, they say it's not too much of a change. They say the only major inconvenience will be receiving large packages or anything requiring a signature.

"You just about have to be here at the same time the carrier was or you'll have to go into Devils Lake to pick it up if you want it right away," said Gilbraith.

"I do get a lot of packages so if they get too big I'll have to go to Devils Lake to get them," said Royal Dingman.

Post office officials have been trying to find a new officer in charge to work at the post office. It has been a challenge, since the post office is only open 2 hours a day.

"I put out a request within about 20 miles because people normally aren't willing to drive more than that, said Manager of Post Office Operation Gloria Hauge.

If they can't find anyone they'll start the process of closing it.

Post offices suspending services is also something that can happen in small communities as a result of a declining population.
