WEST FARGO – A suspected drunken driver allegedly led police on a slow-speed chase early today and took one last swig from a rum bottle before getting out of the reportedly stolen car, Sgt. Jason Dura said.
Fargo police had issued a notice Thursday evening to be on the lookout for the car.
At 2:37 a.m., a West Fargo patrol officer radioed that he was behind a vehicle reported as a possible drunken driver. He ran the license plate and determined it was the Hyundai Sonata reported stolen.
The officer tried to stop the car, but the driver led police on a slow-speed chase, mostly driving 30 mph but hitting 50 mph once or twice, Dura said.
Another officer deployed spike boards at 13th Avenue and 45th Street, which blew all four of the suspect’s tires and brought the car to a stop at 13th Avenue and Meyer Boulevard.
Dura said the “very intoxicated” suspect was observed drinking from the rum bottle during the pursuit.
“When he stopped the car finally, he took one last swig before he got out of the car,” Dura said.
Collin Benjamin Decoteau, 28, was arrested on suspicion of fleeing a police officer in a vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle and DUI. He also was cited for having an expired driver’s license.
Decoteau told police he lives somewhere in Minneapolis but didn’t provide an exact address, Dura said.
