GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A hospital that never opened will soon have patients walking through the doors.
Aurora Hospital in Grand Forks was bought by an Indiana-based company.
Physicians Hospital System of Mishawaka, Indiana completed the purchase of the Aurora Hospital Building, and it will now be called Doctors Hospital.
The new facility is likely the first physician-owned hospital in the state.
The building on South Washington St. has sat empty for several years.
"With the Obamacare healthcare legislation, hospitals like this became blocked from opening and there's a national organization called Physicians Hospital Association and we're a member of that organization," Physicians Hospital System President and CEO Cameron Gilbert said.
The organization contacted Physicians Hospital Group.
A physician-owned association with eight medical facilities in Indiana and Michigan. The group bought the building last week.
"This hospital will be a full-service hospital so we'll be doing emergency room medicine, ob-gyn, we'll be doing ped.'s, we'll be doing adult medicine, ICU," Gilbert said.
The new hospital will be called Doctors Hospital, and will be the second hospital in Grand Forks bringing in a little healthy competition.
"What we bring to the table like all physician hospitals across the country is a little bit of healthcare competition, raising the bar of expectations, making sure our clinical outcomes are excellent, they'll benefit, we'll benefit and in the end patients benefit the most. The community will have two really good hospitals that meet all their needs," Gilbert said.
The building is being worked on and should be open for patients in early January.
