The State Board of Higher Education has approved a request by UND to start raising private donations for a new indoor practice facility.
The school hopes to build the 20-million dollar complex near the site of the old Engelstad Arena.
It would house practice and conditioning facilities for both football and track.
The project has been delayed as university officials considered a suitable location and what features it should include.
The athletic department says it been their number one capital project for some time now.
They'll start to hold fund raisers to raise the necessary funds.
The old Ralph Engelstad Arena would likely be knocked down and the new building would be built in between that arena and the Memorial Stadium.
Brian Faison/UND Athletic Director: "It will impact all of our sports programs from a conditioning stand point and a training stand point, we're excited to begin the process and obviously getting approval from the board is a real critical component to get going."
Board members also said today there was no decision reached by a judge on the issue of the restraining order filed dealing the Fighting Sioux nickname.
In a hearing last week, the judge told the board he would have a decision by Christmas.
