BISMARCK, N.D. — Former Democratic North Dakota Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp says she's considering a race for the U.S. Senate.

Heitkamp said Monday she expects to make an announcement within 30 days.

Incumbent Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad is stepping down next year, and North Dakota Democrats don't have a candidate for his seat.

North Dakota Republican U.S. Rep. Rick Berg and Bismarck businessman Duane Sand are seeking the GOP endorsement to run for the Senate.

Last year, Heitkamp said she wasn't interested in a Senate race. She said Monday that Conrad's expected departure and Congress' "inability to compromise" on important issues have made her rethink things.

The 55-year-old Heitkamp is a former attorney general and tax commissioner. She hasn't run for statewide office since she lost a race for governor in 2000.
