GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Ben Blood scored off a faceoff at 14:35 of the third period and Corban Knight added a late tally to lift North Dakota to a 3-1 win over Maine on Friday.

North Dakota finally figured out the Black Bears after four straight losses, including a sweep last year in Orono, Maine.

With less than five minutes to play, Knight won a faceoff for the Fighting Sioux (2-1-0), sending the puck back to Blood, who wristed it past Black Bears (1-2-0) goalie Martin Ouellette.

"I had a great lane to get the puck to the net," Blood said. "I put it there and it went in."

Knight added a tally in the closing minutes to make a winner of goalie Brad Eidsness. Eidsness started in net for the first time this season and made 30 stops.

Maine took a 1-0 lead when Spencer Abbott scored on the power play at 2:03 of the second period. Less than three minutes later, Michael Parks answered for North Dakota.

The Sioux had chances but misfired on six power-play chances. They were outshot 31-21.

Ouellette made 18 saves for Maine, which fell to 3-2-0 all-time at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

"It's a good win against a good team. It wasn't the prettiest hockey game," North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol said.

The teams meet again Saturday.
