EAST OF Akeley, MN (WDAZ-TV) - A Minnesota State Patrol trooper was assaulted over the weekend and the suspect led other troopers and deputies on a high-speed chase before crashing his car.
The incident began at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday on Highway 34, east of Akeley, when 26-year-old Elijah Lee Knowles, of Akeley, resisted arrest for DWI.
After field sobriety tests, including a breath test, trooper Darcy Gagnon attempted to handcuff Knowles, who resisted arrest.
Authorities say Knowles hit Gagnon several times on the head with her Taser. Gagnon had to have a head wound stapled shut, but she's expected to make a full recovery.
According to the criminal complaint, Knowles tried to put the Taser to the trooper's head and pulled the trigger, but the safety prevented it from deploying. Knowles then tried to take the officer's gun, but wasn't able to.
When Hubbard County Sheriff's deputies arrived, Knowles fled south on County Road 33 at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
After Knowles attempted to ram two squad cars, he crashed his car near Highway 46 and 200th St. in Hubbard County, and was arrested.
Prosecutors charged Knowles with nine counts, including first-degree assault (six felonies and three gross misdemeanors). He is currently being held in Hubbard County on $250,000 bail.
State Patrol officials say Trooper Gagnon’s training helped her survive the attack.
