Lake Region Corn Harvest Behind Schedule

Farmers are ahead of where they were last year at this time, but behind where they would be on a normal year.

You may now be seeing more harvested corn fields, but the harvest is still behind in the Lake Region. Farmers are ahead of where they were last year at this time, but behind where they would be on a normal year. There's still 30 to 40 percent of the corn crop that needs to be harvested there. Some of it may not be done until the spring.

The weather we've had this year delayed this year's harvest, just as it did last year. The recent snow has also gotten in the way of the harvest.

Some of the later maturing corn varieties are still in the 30 to 35 percent moisture range. That will likely be harvested in the spring.

Bill Hodous/RAMSEY COUNTY EXTENSION AGENT: "We had that cold wet spring where we really didn't get a lot of planting done until after the 15th of May and then of course the cool wet summer all summer long didn't give us the growing degree units that we needed."

Some farmers are also seeing problems with corn breakage this year, which may also make the harvest more difficult.
