North Dakota is harvesting fewer Christmas trees, in part because more consumers apparently are switching to artificial trees.

State Forester Larry Kotchman said the number of Christmas tree growers in the state is down to 10. He expects they will harvest about 5,000 trees this year.

Kotchman said North Dakota growers also face competition from retailers who import trees from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
