Old Leevers Building Taking Shape With Major Renovations

GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Business along South Washington St. continues to expand and the old Leever's grocery store in the center of town is undergoing some renovations.

On Thursday, there was still a lot of construction going on, but the old grocery store has been transformed into a lively strip mall.

Grand Forks has had its fair share of new stores and chain restaurants, but this new strip mall is different.

"It was an old grocery store and it was intact inside and we tore it down. (It) took us about 2 1/2 months to strip it," construction worker Robert Henry said.

"Just a different variety. It's a location that's always been--it's always been a grocery store, it's in the center of the city. It's got good parking and visibility, it's going to look new on the outside as well as on the inside," president of Dakota Commerical Kevin Ritterman said.

Trucks and tractors may fill the parking lots now, but in a few short months, it'll be a different story.

"Both tenants should open sometime in December," Ritterman said.

"Oh it's growing. It's definitely growing and it's a good thing," Henry said.

Fuji, a Japanese steakhouse, and Planet Fitness are two of the new storefronts moving in. The store owners are hoping their businesses can add some variety to the historic town.

"The current status is that we have about two thirds of the building leased today, Fuji Japanese Steakhouse and Planet Fitness, and we have approximately 7 to 10 thousand square feet left to lease in the center of the building," Ritterman said.

The exact opening date is still in the works but customers can expect to see open doors before the new year.
