GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A University of North Dakota geology team is heading back to Antarctica.
The team led by UND geomorphologist Jaakko Putkonen (YAH'-koh poot-KOH'-nen) was leaving Wednesday for a two-month expedition to one of the continent's most remote ice-free valleys. The trip funded by the National Science Foundation continues work Putkonen and students began last November.
The team is researching changes in the Antarctic landscape. Part of this year's work will involve recovering data-gathering instruments that were set in place last year.
This is the last field phase of the project. Putkonen and his students will spend about another year analyzing data they've collected.
