GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A 31-year-old man shot and killed himself outside the Altru Hospital emergency room Tuesday morning.
The shooting happened at 11:30 a.m. and the name of the victim is still being withheld pending family notification.
"It appears right now, at this point in the investigation, that a 31-year-old Grand Forks resident died of a self inflicted gunshot wound," Sgt. Brett Johnson said.
The man fired one shot to his chest. He had no other injuries.
"No other patients or employees were in the vicinity of the incident, and Altru security were immediately on hand," director of emergency services at Altru, Christopher Boe, said.
"It appears to be isolated to this one individual," Johnson said.
Police say the man dropped the gun immediately. It was later retrieved by the Grand Forks Police Department. Doctors say they did everything they could.
"He was brought back to the resuscitation bay, and we did attempt resuscitation efforts, but they were unsuccessful unfortunately," Boe said.
Shortly after the shooting all that remained outside the Altru ER was crime scene tape, police and a story to piece together.
