GF Airport Officials Working to Ensure Enough Parking Spaces with New Flights

GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - The new Byron L. Dorgan terminal opened a little more than three months ago and Grand Forks International Airport authorities say the transition has gone smoothly.

But with more flights available, they are taking a closer look at parking.

Parking is not an issue right now, but with Allegiant Airlines planning to add more flights during the winter months, officials are taking a look close look at it.

Tarek Schanilec walked into the new terminal and was surprised by the building.

"My friend's traveling back to Brazil, so we came here and first time in this terminal, it's pretty nice, lots of space and I like it," Schanilec said.

The $21 million terminal is hosting more passengers these days and passengers and terminal tenants alike seem to really like the new space.

"Very modern, I like everything here. Modern, open and of course friendly here in Grand Forks too," Schanilec said.

"You hear the 'wow, wow this is really nice, this is really good.' That makes you feel good," Hertz Rent-a-car employee Phillip Medina said.

With Allegiant adding a couple of extra flights per week to both Orlando and Las Vegas, airport officials are taking a look at parking.

"We're going to monitor and have been monitoring closely how full our parking lots are over the past couple months and will continue to do so over the winter," airport executive director Patrick Dame said.

Right now, the airport has nearly 600 parking spaces for passengers, nearly 30 percent more than there were at the old terminal.

"Allegiant added a lot of extra flights in this winter and we were prepared and constructed for what our average daily flight traffic was going to be. Then, when they came in with their winter schedule and it's a lot bigger than what we anticipate, they really fill up our parking lot quite a bit," Dame said.

"Service is real great, you enter and it's pretty easy to find your gate and everything, so no complaints," Schanelic said.

Dame says since the transition, everything at the airport has been running smoothly.
