GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - After the season, UND football head coach Chris Mussman won several conference coach of the year awards, but now he has a chance at a national honor.

Mussman is one of five finalists for the Football Championship Subdivision Coach of the Year.

After going 3-8 last year, Mussman led the team to an 8-3 record and a shar of the Great West Conference championship.

Mussman has three conference coach of the year awards this year, but he says this is different.

"The latest one is unique because it's total team effort there, it's community service hours, our performance in the classroom. It's not just coach of the year Chriss Mussman, it's the program. It's doing things the right way and stuff that had been set in place long before I got here and just trying to follow that great tradition here of UND football. It validates what you are doing off the field and with the guys in the meeting rooms," Mussman said.

Fans can vote once a day at CoachoftheYear.com

The winner will be announced January 9.
