CANDO, N.D. (AP) — Two former Towner County officials face theft charges after an investigation by state crime bureau agents.

Fifty-three-year-old Deputy Auditor Valorie Armstrong of Hansboro and 72-year-old Deputy Treasurer Eileen Fiedler of Cando both face felonies that carry a maximum punishment upon conviction of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that in mid-November, newly elected County Auditor Joni Morlock alerted authorities to alleged discrepancies in the county's finances. County Commission Vice Chairman Ken Tuebner says the amount of money allegedly involved is still being investigated. Sheriff Vaughn Klier calls it a "very significant amount."

A telephone listing for Armstrong could not immediately be found. An effort to contact Fiedler Thursday was not successful.
