MORA, Minn. (AP) — Three people were killed and a fourth was critically injured Thursday when a fire swept through an apartment building in east-central Minnesota.
Deputies were able to help safely evacuate three people from the four-plex in the small town of Mora but later discovered there were multiple victims, authorities said.
"It's a sad day in Kanabec County, and I feel real bad for the families," Sheriff Steve Schulz said.
Smoke alarms were going off as nearby residents helped evacuate people from the building, Mora Fire Chief Mike Anderson said.
Deputies were called just before 7:15 a.m. Thursday and found the building engulfed in flames. An adult was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital in critical condition.
Names of the victims had not been released Thursday evening. The Star Tribune reported the juvenile victim was about 12 and attended middle school in Mora.
"For something like this, it is a tragedy for our community," Mayor Greg Ardner told The Associated Press.
The Minnesota state fire marshal and the Kanabec County sheriff's office were investigating the cause of the blaze.
Mora is a town of about 3,700 located 70 miles north of Minneapolis.
