(AP) — A 36-year-old Fort Totten man has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for beating his sons.

Roman Cavanaugh Jr. received 52 months behind bars Friday on charges of child abuse and neglect for punching his 11-year-old and 12-year-old sons in the face. The older boy also suffered neck injuries from being choked.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says Cavanaugh was ordered to pay nearly $1,500 in restitution in the sentencing given by U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson.

Cavanaugh pleaded guilty in September to the beatings, which occurred last December in his home on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation.

Purdon says Cavanaugh resisted arrest by pushing a couch against the door of his home. Police broke through and took the children to a hospital for treatment.
