The world will be watching as a Warroad, Minnesota woman joins her team on the hockey rink in Vancouver.
Gigi Marvin was recently named to the U-S olympic hockey team.
This past week, she was back in Warroad to spend the holidays with her family.
It's hockey night in Warroad. And former Miss Hockey Gigi Marvin is back at her home ice, not to skate, but instead to see family and friends.
"You just walk in the rink and you see the six olympians that came before me, and you see the state tournament banners and it's just a hockey rich community," Marvin said.
Marvin will now join the list of olympic hockey players from Warroad. The former Gopher standout survived the last round of cuts and made the U-S women's team, even though it meant saying goodbye to two teammates she trained with for months.
"Two people have to get cut, that's just the way it goes and on the flip side, I couldn't wait to call my family and tell them the great news," Marvin said.
"Our family was ecstatic and I think it's a great thing for the community as well, her being a hometown girl and a Minnesota kid and the whole state, when we were at the mall, the place erupted when her name was read off," Gigi's aunt Janet Marvin said.
Now Marvin has about a month and a half before the team heads to Vancouver for the winter games. And her family is ready too. Her cousins have already made signs and shirts so they can cheer on number 19.
"It's going to be a fun road trip, we're going to drive out and see the sights and hopefully come back with a gold medal," Gigi's cousin Coreen Lindquist said.
"We packed the rink in both games against Canada, it was 15 thousand people in the rink and it was such a good feeling when we scored because it was absolutely dead silent," Gigi said.
And Marvin expects more of the same if they face Canada once again. This is her first time playing on the world stage, but the life-long hockey player says she's already been trained to channel her nerves.
"For me, it's no fun if you're playing when you're nervous, whatever you're doing, it's no fun if you're nervous and gripping the stick tight, you just want to play and enjoy the moments," Gigi said.
Marvin is the seventh olympic hockey player to come out of Warroad.
Team USA will play another exhibition game in just three days at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, against rival Team Canada!
