GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - The Alerus Center is on track to have new turf installed before next year's football season.
The new turf is a longer, two inch fiber with a rubber infill. This longer turf is more like regular grass.
It will require some construction work inside the Alerus center. The new stuff is about four times heavier than the old turf.
The project is expected to cost around $4 million.
A local architect firm has been selected and bids will go out this weekend.
"After we do bid openings then we still have to get commission and council approval. If we receive approval on both those, then we would execute contracts and are expected to then have the turf project complete for the first home game," Alerus Center Director of Operations Jeremy Linstad said.
UND and the Alerus Center haven't reached an agreement yet on how to pay for the new turf. The two will share costs. An agreement is expected within the next 30 days.
