GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Firefighters battled flames outside a Grand Forks home Saturday afternoon.

A 10 by 14 foot truck caught fire outside a home in the 1000 block of Cottonwood Street around 2:30 p.m.

Firefighters were on the scene for about 45 minutes. When they arrived, there was lots of smoke and the van was fully engulfed in flames.

The fire caused some damage to the nearby garage. Firefighters say the incident was completely accidental when a man tried to start the vehicle.

"He was using starter fluid. The vehicle backfired, and the starter fluid basically ignited inside the vehicle. It's a van, so part of the engine is on the inside of the van," Battalion chief Rob Corbett said.

No one was injured, but everything in the vehicle was a total loss.
