GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ-TV) - Gifts and food are piled high in a community church. The Holy Family Catholic Church in town is giving less fortunate families, a Christmas this year.

Joy and excitement describes the feeling at Holy Family today.

Those who donated gifts and food were excited to not only put a smile on someone's face for today, but for the entire holiday season.

"Some tears and there's laughter and many many thanks," said Judy Schill, a Program Manager at Northeast Human Services.

Many thanks there will be food on the table and presents under the tree this year.

"It has done a lot because I'm not working currently and it is very hard. This really helps out a lot," said one receiving gifts, LaDonna Mortenson.

"It's between 20 and 25 dollars a gift at a minimum so quick math, wow that's a lot of money," said Paula Bradbury, the Parish Health Minister at Holy Family Catholic Church.

More than 120 families will receive gifts from Holy Catholic as well as a meal that's sure to satisfy an appetite.

"The turkey, potatoes, stuffing, the vegetables, fruit, pies, bread and butter, so it's pretty much all the fixings for a turkey dinner," said Bradbury.

"Most of them are just so overwhelmed, when we tell them we're sponsoring them for gifts. I don't think they have any idea how much they're going to get," said Schill.

Those who once struggled to provide a Christmas for their family are now giving to others in hopes that they too will be inspired by the holiday spirit.

"He had a couple extra gifts at home that he wanted to use and as we talked, he informed me that he and his son had been on our angel tree project 11 years ago and so he was wanting to give back," said Bradbury.

"I'm so excited!" said Mortenson.

The project gives two gifts to each adult and two clothing items as well as one gift per child.
