Our Christmas blizzard was one for the record books.

A total of more than 25 inches fell in Grand Forks. That makes it the biggest blizzard for the month of December.

The National Weather Service says there have been bigger blizzards in the past, but they happened in January or February when blizzards are more likely.

They say the Christmas blizzard was widespread and dropped a lot of snow across the Midwest.

Meteorologist Greg Gust with the National Weather Service says, “From a historical perspective, this one was a big one. It was record-setting for Grand Forks, as measured in Grand Forks city proper.”

The National Weather Service says this year is considered to be an El Nino winter, which typically means it is warmer and drier than normal, but that December hasn't followed that trend.
