GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A big change comes to the Grand Forks Herald as longtime editor Mike Jacobs is stepping down to take on a new title.

The Stanley, ND, native has filled the position for nearly three decades.

"I know I'm gonna miss it," Jacobs said.

The Herald has had the same editor for 28 years, when Jacobs took over the position in 1984. He's stepping down to become director for a new upper Midwest news service Forum Communications announced Wednesday.

Forum Communications owns the Herald and WDAZ-TV, along with numerous other papers and three other TV stations.

"It's sort of like the circus trick, you know, where you leap from one horse to the other and there's that moment between where you're safely on the back of one horse, and you're not quite on back of the other horse, and you could fall down and get trampled. That's how I'm feeling today," Jacobs said.

Coworkers congratulate their editor, one whose 45-year friendship with Mike goes back to their days at the Dakota Student.

"There's nobody who knows more about North Dakota, who cares more about North Dakota. I think that this new venture will be exciting for him," Herald writer Chuck Haga said.

The search for a new editor will be soon underway and Jacobs will do the choosing. He's holding onto the title of publisher of the Herald.

"It's going to be weird. It will be particularly weird when we actually get to the interviewing process because I won't be able to resist seeing that person sitting in the chair," Jacobs said.

"It's going to be exciting to see how this develops, and how it affects the collection and presentation of news in North Dakota," Haga said.
