GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Altru has officially unveiled its new and improved Medical Fitness Center.
Thursday's grand opening means patients will have access to the nearly $60,000 upgrade.
"I've used the abductor, I've used the leg press, curls and the bike to warm up on," Altru nurse and patient Jim Altman said.
Altman has been a nurse at Altru for the past 13 years but after knee replacement surgery, he became a patient.
"Ah, I'm getting too old, no it was bone on bone. It was getting to the point they couldn't do anything more with it. They tried cleaning it up, injections and it wouldn't get any better," Altman said.
After five weeks of working with new, easily accessible exercise equipment at Altru's Medical Fitness Center, Altman can walk with a cane.
"The mobility is there, got to work on strengthening the legs so I can walk better," Altman said.
The Center's Grand Opening showed off the nearly $60,000 of new equipment added towards the end of 2011.
"It allows access to a lot more patients and members that couldn't use strength equipment before," Altru medical fitness specialist Scott Holm said.
"Wheelchairs can access a lot of the equipment so the seats swing out and a wheelchair can come in and use something they weren't able to do," Altru Rehab Outpatient Therapy Services director Maureen Riley said.
The opening was also a chance to show off the facilities many exercise classes, fitness programs and medical services.
"It's awesome, I don't know what the other places look like, maybe bigger and better but you can't top this as far as I'm concerned, It's nice," Altman said.
The center is open to Altru employees, patients and the general public.
