BLUE EARTH, Minn. (AP) — A woman is dead and a man severely burned after a house fire in southern Minnesota.

Faribault County authorities say 57-year-old Susan Domek died in the Wednesday evening fire in Blue Earth.

Fifty-seven-year-old Dennis Spencer was able to escape the house. The Free Press of Mankato (http://bit.ly/xryvX1) reports he had burns mainly to his upper body.

Deputy Sheriff Shane Dulac says Spencer told him he went to the basement to check on a wood-burning stove, opened its door and was hit in the face by a ball of fire.

Dulac says Spencer then tried to help get Domek out of the house but was hampered by his badly burned hands.

Spencer was listed Thursday in critical condition at HCMC.

The State Fire Marshal's office is investigating.
