BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Department of Health says there has been an increase in the number of animals testing positive for rabies in one North Dakota county.

The department is alerting residents of Bowman County after three animals — two skunks and one dog — tested positive for the viral disease since November.

Health Department epidemiologist Michelle Feist says having three positive rabies cases from one area in a short period of time is unusual.

She says that prior to the three cases, only one animal from Bowman County has tested positive for rabies in the past five years.

State health officials are reminding residents to vaccinate their pets and avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals.
