GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A judge has ruled that sponsors of petition drives aimed at restoring the University of North Dakota's retired Fighting Sioux nickname may not collect signatures inside Ralph Engelstad Arena this weekend.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that Judge Sonja Clapp denied a request by nickname backers for a temporary injunction ordering the arena to allow them access during UND hockey games against Minnesota Friday night and Saturday night.

The petition circulators have said they're about halfway to collecting the needed 13,500 signatures to force a June referendum on the nickname. They wanted to work the crowds of UND hockey fans at the Minnesota series to ensure they can meet the Feb. 7 filing deadline.

UND has retired its nickname after a dispute with the NCAA, which considered it offensive.
